Are HPV infections common?

HPV infections of the cervix are the most commonly occurring (12% of women, according to epidemiological studies). In a high proportion of cases they are short-lived (six months, two years). In a lower proportion they can persist, and in the long run cause the development of tumor disease leading up to cervical cancer.

SELF-SAMPLING... WHAT IS IT?

Self-sampling is the collection of vaginal cells, carried out by the woman herself.
The method has been proven reliable for HPV testing and has been declared suitable by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

THE EXAMINATIONS THAT ARE PERFORMED IN YOUR SELF-SAMPLING KIT ARE USED TO DETERMINE:

  • If you are infected with HPV and which type;
  • Whether the cells in your self-sampling test are adequate/normal (control Pap test) or whether abnormal cells are observed.

  • A positive self-sampling HPV test with adequate/normal cells does not mean that tumor disease is present, but later follow-up examinations are recommended.

Who are at greatest risk for HPV infection?

  • Those engaging in sexual activity, particularly without the use of protective methods;
  • Those who have never had a pap smear and/or HPV test;
  • Those who have had multiple partners and partners infected with HPV or other sexually transmitted diseases;
  • Those who have had previous investigations for cervical tumor disease;
  • Those who have had a transplant, hormonal contraceptives, or who smoke;
  • Those who have had multiple (more than three) pregnancies at term.
